In medieval times, small Jewish communities existed in and around Madrid, contributing to commerce, craftsmanship, administration, and intellectual life. This presence, however, was fragile, shaped by periods of coexistence as well as growing tension, leading to the exile of most of the community, before coming back in the last century.

Indeed, in the 20th century, Jewish life gradually returned to Madrid, carried by Sephardic Jews, migrants, and new generations. Today, Jewish culture, memory, and identity are once again part of the city’s public and cultural landscape.
