Velankanni is one of the most visited pilgrimage sites in India and one of the very few places where Christians, Hindus and Muslims come to pray at the same shrine. The four hour drive from Pondicherry through the Cauvery delta is itself worth the journey. Fertile paddy fields, fishing villages and the slow rhythm of coastal Tamil Nadu before the basilica's white Gothic spires come into view above the coastline.
Inside the shrine complex, pilgrims offer votive candles shaped like eyes, limbs and hearts as acts of thanksgiving for healings received.
